What is NOVA?

NOVA is a social club for the promotion and appreciation of Japanese animation (known as anime, AH-nee-may) based in the Portland, Oregon area. Besides viewing anime, members, friends and visitors meet to play games, talk, draw and do any number of other fun things. NOVA stands for Northern Oregon Vancouver (WA) Anime. When it was founded, one of the founders and a few of the members lived in Vancouver. We don't know how many live there now. Besides, it's a cool acronymn.

What days are NOVA meetings held?

NOVA meetings are held on the first and third Saturday of each month. Unusual circumstances can change this (such as anime conventions or holidays), so it is a good idea to confirm by checking this website or the mailing list before going to a meeting. In addition, there are sometimes special one-off meetings, such as the NOVA BBQ, which has happened at various places, a couple of times a year.

What times are NOVA meetings held?

NOVA meetings typically begin about 5 pm and run until 9:30 pm.

Where are meetings held?

NOVA meetings alternate between:

  1. Tigard Water Auditorium (most meetings).
  2. Tigard City Hall (backup meeting place).

Here is the Meeting Directions Page. There are various fallback meeting places, so be sure to check this website or the mailing list for late announcements.

What is this mailing list you keep talking about?

The NOVA Mailing List is described on this page. It is for discussion of various issues of interest to the club, including schedules for meetings, location changes, and such like.

Who can attend meetings?

Anybody may attend meetings, be they students, professionals or any other category you want to invent. NOVA is not a college club, so it can welcome everyone. We encourage anyone who finds themselves attending more meetings to become a member of NOVA, as this confers the right to vote on NOVA issues such as elections; check out items from the archive; and run for officer of the club.

Are there dues? How much?

Pay $15 once per year.

Is there a family rate?

Yes. If more than one family member joins, then the first membership is the $15 yearly rate, and additional memberships are $7.50 yearly.

Is there a schedule of videos which will be shown at a meeting?

There is a schedule, located here. In cases where the online schedule is not up to date, you can usually request information on the mailing list, and an officer should respond with moderately accurate information. Note that the schedule can always be modified by popular outcry, when a cool new thing shows up. Items are usually subtitled, sometimes by fan groups, and sometimes by a commercial company.

In addition to the scheduled items, when the venue allows there are often independent viewing 'stations' distributed about the meeting place, showing whatever someone deems interesting. You'll often see unsubtitled items direct from Japanese television this way.

Can I request a specific series be put on the schedule? How?

You can always make a request, but your success depends on several factors:

  • Popular interest in a show
  • Availability of the tapes
  • Competition with other titles

And other factors which I have forgotten ;^)~
